Readers

Dear parents and guardians,

Sinéad has asked that all teachers stop giving written homework for the month of June. Myself and Becky feel however that it’s really important to keep up the reading practice over the last few weeks of Junior Infants. The boys and girls have come on so much this year with their sounds, blending and tricky words and we have decided to send home some decodable graded readers. Each child is getting five books:
An ant and a cat
A pup
A bag
Big Pig
Ken gets wet!

You can keep these books for the summer, and work on them over the next few weeks at your leisure. Please return in September.

Kind regards,
Julie and Becky

No homework for June

Hi all,

You'll be delighted to know that there will be no homework for the month of June. Sinéad has asked all teachers to cancel it :-) A note with more information will be sent out later on in the week...

Not long to go now... Only four weeks! It's hard to believe that the class are nearly finished Junior Infants. The year has flown by!

Homework 28th May - 1st June

We'll be doing end of year assessments over the next week or so.

Homework this week is revision:
- Revise all of the single alphabet sounds. Please do not use the letter names, but the sounds they make as this will help with blending. I have included a new visual in their folders with the Jolly Phonics sounds and associated pictures to remind them of the action and sound. The songs will help with revision too!

- Tricky words groups 1 & 2. I have included two Tricky words sheets, one for each group. These are all the flashcards your child should have in their Tricky Words folder.

NB Tricky Words are words that should NOT be blended. They are words which should be recognised instantly. A lot of these words are not decodable with the Jolly Phonics sounds. They should just be learned off.

REMINDER: School tour tomorrow! The weather forecast is looking really good so please ensure your child is wearing sunscreen as we'll be outdoors all day. Thanks!

Biodiversity Week
This week is an exciting week in the school! We'll be learning loads about the environment and various ways we can all look after the world around us. Our class will be participating in many workshops - bird watching, trip to a seaside habitat, spring clean of the school grounds as well as a workshop about plastic and the oceans.

If possible, by Friday could everyone collect some colourful plastic wrappers for an art activity - sweet wrappers, colourful straws and other plastic packaging etc. Thank you!

Also, this is completely optional, but there is a whole-school competition for bio-diversity week. A child from the school will have the chance to get their own poem read by Marty Whelan live on air on Lyric FM.The title of the poem is "Our World". If you and your child wish to make up a poem about our world, send it on to me over the next few days.

Thanks a million,
Julie

Homework - Lines for show

There will be no homework this week!

Instead, please practice with your child any lines they have for the school play. They need to be able to memorise these if possible for next Tuesday! It would be great if you could practice projecting their voice, and possibly using some expression while they are saying their line.

I gave a note out last week about costumes, as well as a script with any lines your child has. Let me know if your child has not received this. Thanks!

Last week of homework before the holidays :-)

*Please try to stick to the homework schedule for this week and do not skip ahead. Blending takes time for children to grasp so don’t worry if it doesn’t click straight away, we’ll get there! :-)

Monday
Please complete revision sheet. Ring the correct initial sound for each picture. (c, k, e, h, r, m)
Learn to recognise new tricky word ‘was’ and revise other tricky words. (See homework helpers for suggested activities)

Tuesday
Please complete blending worksheet (on the back of Monday's worksheet). Read each word. Ring the correct picture.
Learn to recognise new tricky word ‘was’ and revise other tricky words. (See homework helpers for suggested activities)

Wednesday/Thursday
We will have started blending in class. Blending is the process of saying each sound in a word individually and then blending these sounds to read the word. E.g. ‘c’ – ‘a’ – ‘t’  ‘cat’

Blending game
You will need: blending mat, roll and read sheet, dice, whiteboard marker.

Step 1: Roll the dice.
Step 2: Find the corresponding word on the roll and read sheet that matches the number on the dice.
Step 3: Blend each sound to make the word.
Step 4: Ask your child to slide, clap, stomp the sounds to blend the word. (We will have practiced these techniques in school.)
Step 5: Write the word on the blending mat using the white board marker and blend.
Step 6: Roll the dice and start the game again.
(There are more words on the back to roll and read if you feel your child is able.)

Learn to recognise new tricky word ‘was’ and revise other tricky words. (See homework helpers for suggested activities)

Here’s a video showing what blending is:
